The Cahokia Mounds Museum Society is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1976 to support the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site. Our mission is:
To promote for the public benefit the educational and scientific aspects of the Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site and associated archaeological sphere, and to support activities that are calculated to preserve, develop or interpret Cahokia Mounds.
Our primary source of funding is through operation of the museum gift shop , collection of membership fees and donations .

New Society members receive a variety of benefits , such as a discount in the gift shop and the quarterly publication, named the cahokian .

The many activities supported by the Society include:
  • Special Events such as Kids Day, Archaeology Days, the Contemporary Indian Art Show, American Indian Pow Wows.. and others..
  • Sponsoring archaeological field schools and other research.
  • Sponsoring volunteer programs, including opportunities to assist with archaeological research at the site (Membership in the Society is required for some activities).
  • Craft Classes.
  • The Winter Lecture Series.
  • Providing guidebooks for the interpretive trails and Nature/Culture hikes.
  • The Native American Performing Arts Series (Vocal and Instrumental performances).
  • Promoting the site by producing educational materials and materials for use by TV, radio and newspapers in public service announcements.
  • The Society has produced the award-winning video Cahokia Mounds-Ancient Metropolis and the award-winning book Cahokia: City of the Sun.
  • Journey to Cahokia is a CMMS produced children's educational and activity book centering on Cahokia from a child's perspective.
    These titles are available for purchase in the gift shop.
  • The Society is currently involved in a special effort to acquire mounds from private owners and expand the site boundaries by reclaiming significant archaeological property from subdivisions adjacent to the site.
